Turning the World Itself into a Loop Sequencer.

PSYBERTECHNO, a media-art series, today released psybertechno:geo, a browser work that transforms location into music. It runs free of charge in any smartphone or desktop browser — no installation required.

Overview — Moving through the city becomes the arrangement

psybertechno:geo divides the entire planet into a grid, with every cell holding its own loop sequence — a planet-spanning loop sequencer. Turn on GPS and walk, cycle, or ride through the city: each time you cross into a new cell, the pattern shifts on the next bar. The music builds just as you clear the highway and reach the great bridge — the work creates a new way of listening to the world.

The entire world runs on a single shared tempo of 130 BPM. No matter which device presses play, where on Earth, or when, every listener lands on the same beat of the same global bar. Even when you stop playback, the track never stops on the world's side.

Key Features

1. A three-layer grid maps "timbre → genre → arrangement"
ZONE cells (~1.1 km) determine each district's instrument voices (kits), AREA cells (~250 m) set the genre and key, and SPOT cells (~60 m) drive the arrangement. The voice changes by district, the genre by area — and wandering within an area moves only the arrangement, in the same key. Movement itself becomes the arrangement of the track.

2. Full synthesis, zero samples
Every sound is synthesized in real time on the device (a Rust DSP core compiled to WebAssembly). Timbres are seeded per district from a family of synthesis models paying homage to classic hardware — 808-style sub kicks, 909-style snares, 303-style acid bass — yielding roughly 900 distinct kit lineages.

3. A shared world anyone can rewrite
Anyone can listen from anywhere, but rewriting a cell and publishing it to the world requires physically standing there. Patterns laid down by countless hands accumulate — "this place deserves this rhythm" — until each city begins to carry music of its own. Cells that no one visits slowly weather back to their generated state over about 90 days, while places people keep walking through survive even without new edits.

4. Journey recording
Record an entire performance-in-motion — what you heard on that road, on that day — and replay or share it later, complete with the route traced on the map.

5. An homage to hardware
The UI is a hardware deck modeled on the AKAI MPC2000XL sampler. The top half of the screen is the real world as a map; the bottom half is the machine — the world, plugged into a sampler.

Privacy

Location data is used solely for generating the music and for the work's sharing features. Coordinates, cell IDs, and movement history are never sent to analytics. Sharing a journey always passes through a confirmation screen that makes clear the recording contains a GPS trace.

This work is dedicated to DJ V@MPIRE (Takuya Minamikawa, 1983.07.29 – 2014) and launches on his birthday, July 29, on psybertechno.com — the domain that was once his.

The app includes a short dedication and Support links to the official donation pages of organizations working on cancer, childhood cancer, and leukemia. The work only points to these organizations' own channels — it takes no part in any donation or payment flow, and the work itself is entirely free and non-commercial.

About the Series

PSYBERTECHNO is a media-art series built around the theme of music that evolves on its own. This work, PSYBERTECHNO:GEO / T, is the first in a family of "world samplers" that convert signals from the real world into one endless track. The track being played has no title — because the track belongs to no one in particular.
